Pelvic Pain Q & A

What is Pelvic Pain?

Pelvic pain isn’t limited to problems with your reproductive system. It encompasses pain that originates anywhere in the pelvic region, which includes muscles and structures that make up your urinary and digestive tracts.

Pelvic pain can be confusing because it may come and go, be felt as a sharp pain, or feel more like pressure than pain. No matter where your pain is located or the type of pain you feel, pain is your body’s way of letting you know that something isn’t right. To protect your health and get pain relief, schedule an appointment with the team at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology.

What Gynecological Conditions Might Cause My Pelvic Pain?

As you might suspect, many different conditions can cause pelvic pain. However, some of the most common sources include:

  • Endometriosis: Endometriosis develops when tissues normally found inside your uterus begin to grow outside the uterus. These patches of tissue often appear on your ovaries, Fallopian tubes, and on the outer uterine wall, but they can affect any organ in your pelvic region. As the tissues break down and bleed following your monthly cycle, scarring and pain develop.
  • Uterine Fibroids: Fibroids are noncancerous growths that occur in the wall of your uterus. Small fibroids usually don’t cause problems, but as they grow, they lead to pressure, pain, and heavy bleeding.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Pelvic inflammatory disease is a painful infection in your reproductive organs.
  • Ovarian Cysts: Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop in or on your ovaries. Though they can cause pain at any time, if they rupture, you’ll experience sudden and severe pain that requires immediate medical attention.
  • Interstitial Cystitis: Also called painful bladder syndrome, interstitial cystitis causes pelvic pain accompanied by frequent urination.

How is Pelvic Pain Treated?

Your doctor at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology may need to perform blood tests or an ultrasound to accurately diagnose the cause of your pelvic pain. Your treatment is then based on your diagnosis.

There isn’t one primary treatment for pelvic pain. You may need pain-relieving medication, antibiotics to treat an infection, or hormonal medications, depending on the underlying cause. If you have fibroids, cysts, or endometriosis, your doctor may recommend minimally invasive surgery to remove growths.

No matter what causes your pelvic pain, you can depend on compassionate and personalized care from the team at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology. To schedule an appointment, call one the offices nearest to you, or book an appointment online.
