Prenatal Care Q & A

What is Prenatal Care?

Prenatal care is preventive care for mothers-to-be to help maintain a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal care is good for your growing baby. That’s because babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to be born underweight. And, tragically, babies whose moms didn’t get prenatal care are five times more likely to die.

As soon as you learn you’re pregnant, the obstetricians at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology will set up a schedule of prenatal care visits. Depending on your health and other factors, expect to see the doctor:

  • About once each month for weeks 4-28
  • Twice a month for weeks 28-36
  • Every week from the 36th week until you give birth

If your pregnancy is high-risk or if you’re over age 35, you'll probably see your doctor more often.

What Should I Expect During My First Prenatal Visit?

During your first prenatal visit, the obstetricians at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology talk with you about your health, lifestyle, and previous pregnancies to help you enjoy the best pregnancy possible. Here’s what you can expect your doctors to do:

  • Ask you about your health and a family history of diseases
  • Ask about medications you’re taking
  • Ask whether you’re taking prenatal vitamins
  • Perform a physical exam
  • Take your blood and urine for lab work
  • Check your blood pressure, height, and weight
  • Calculate your due date

Your pregnancy is an exciting event, and the doctors at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology take the time to answer all of your questions during your visit.

What Should I Expect During Later Prenatal Visits?

Throughout your pregnancy, the doctors at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology continue to pay close attention to your health and the health of your growing baby. They advise you to eat a nutritional diet, avoid alcoholic drinks, smoking, and drugs.

During your check-ups, expect the doctors to:

  • Check your blood pressure
  • Weigh you
  • Check the baby's heart rate

Once you begin to show, they also measure around your stomach to monitor your baby's growth.

What Prenatal Tests Should I Expect?

At your first prenatal visit, the doctors at Bayard Obstetrics & Gynecology perform tests to get a better sense of your overall health. They test for:

  • Your blood type
  • Anemia
  • Infections
  • Possible immunity to chickenpox or German measles
