Endometrial Sampling

What is endometrial sampling?

Endometrial sampling, also called an endometrial biopsy, is a procedure used to remove a small sample of tissue from the uterine lining (endometrium). The sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is examined under a microscope for abnormalities.

The procedure is commonly used to evaluate abnormal bleeding and to rule out conditions affecting the uterine lining, including precancerous changes or cancer.

When is endometrial sampling recommended?

Your provider may suggest endometrial sampling if you experience:

• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Bleeding between periods
• Irregular menstrual cycles
• Bleeding after menopause
• Abnormal ultrasound findings involving the uterine lining
• Persistent abnormal uterine bleeding despite treatment

Endometrial sampling may also be recommended for women with certain risk factors for endometrial cancer or as part of an infertility evaluation.

Because abnormal bleeding can have many causes, obtaining a tissue sample often provides important information that cannot be obtained through imaging studies alone.

What happens during the procedure?

Endometrial sampling is typically performed in the office and usually takes only a few minutes.

During the procedure:

• You lie on an examination table, similar to a routine pelvic exam.
• A speculum is placed into the vagina so your provider can view the cervix.
• A thin instrument is passed through the cervix and into the uterus.
• Gentle suction is used to collect a small sample of endometrial tissue.

Some women experience cramping during the procedure that feels similar to menstrual cramps. Most discomfort is temporary and resolves shortly afterward.

What can I expect afterward?

Following endometrial sampling, you may experience:

• Mild cramping
• Light spotting or bleeding
• Temporary pelvic discomfort

Most patients can return to normal activities the same day.

Your provider will review your pathology results once they become available and discuss any additional testing or treatment that may be necessary based on the findings.
