What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the medical specialty focused on pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Obstetric care may begin before pregnancy with a preconception consultation and continue through prenatal visits, delivery planning, labor and delivery, cesarean delivery when medically needed, postpartum recovery, and family planning after birth.

Your obstetrician helps monitor both your health and your baby’s development, while also guiding you through testing, symptoms, lifestyle questions, and important decisions during pregnancy.
When should I schedule a preventive wellness visit?

You should schedule a preventive wellness visit if you are due for an annual exam, need updated screening, want to discuss birth control or pregnancy planning, or have questions about your reproductive or hormonal health.

Obstetric services we offer

You should schedule a preventive wellness visit if you are due for an annual exam, need updated screening, want to discuss birth control or pregnancy planning, or have questions about your reproductive or hormonal health.
Common reasons for a preventive wellness visit include:
Preconception counseling
Pregnancy confirmation visits
Routine prenatal visits
Prenatal laboratory testing
Genetic screening and counseling
Ultrasound and fetal growth evaluation
Monitoring for pregnancy-related conditions
Management of medical conditions during pregnancy
High-risk pregnancy care and maternal-fetal medicine coordination when needed
Labor and delivery planning
Cesarean delivery when medically indicated
Postpartum care
Breastfeeding, recovery, contraception, and family planning guidance
Your provider will recommend testing and monitoring based on your medical history, pregnancy stage, symptoms, risk factors, and personal preferences.
When should I schedule my first obstetric visit?

You may schedule a preconception visit before trying to conceive. This visit is helpful for reviewing your medical history, medications, vaccinations, prenatal vitamins, prior pregnancies, menstrual history, genetic screening options, and any health conditions that could affect pregnancy.

If you have a positive pregnancy test, contact Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology to schedule your first prenatal visit. The timing of your first appointment may depend on your pregnancy history, symptoms, medical conditions, and how far along you are.

Prenatal visits usually become more frequent as your due date approaches. Some patients may need additional visits, ultrasounds, laboratory testing, or specialist care depending on their pregnancy.

What happens during prenatal visits?

During prenatal appointments, your provider checks your health, monitors your baby’s development, and helps you understand what to expect at each stage of pregnancy.
Depending on how far along you are, your visit may include:
Blood pressure and weight measurements
Urine or blood testing
Review of symptoms and concerns
Measurement of fetal growth
Listening to the baby’s heartbeat
Ultrasound or prenatal screening
Discussion of genetic testing options
Guidance about nutrition, activity, medications, and pregnancy symptoms
Review of warning signs that should prompt a call or urgent evaluation
Delivery planning as your pregnancy progresses
Prenatal care is also a time to ask questions. Your provider can discuss common concerns such as nausea, fatigue, cramping, bleeding, fetal movement, travel, exercise, work restrictions, vaccinations, birth preferences, and postpartum planning.
High-risk pregnancy care

Some pregnancies require closer monitoring because of medical conditions, pregnancy complications, age-related risk factors, prior pregnancy history, or concerns that develop during prenatal care.
Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology provides monitoring and care coordination for higher-risk pregnancies. When appropriate, your OB-GYN may work with maternal-fetal medicine specialists, hospitals, imaging centers, or other specialists to support a safe and well-coordinated pregnancy plan.
Postpartum care after delivery

Care continues after your baby is born. Postpartum visits allow your provider to check your physical recovery, review bleeding and healing, discuss mood and emotional well-being, support feeding concerns, address pain or complications, and review contraception or future pregnancy planning.

Your postpartum care plan is individualized based on your delivery, symptoms, medical history, and recovery needs.
