What is gynecology?

Gynecology is the medical specialty focused on the health of the reproductive system, including the vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
Gynecologic care includes preventive screenings, evaluation of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of reproductive health conditions, fertility-related concerns, menopause care, hormonal health, and surgical management when needed.

When should I see a gynecologist?

You should consider scheduling a gynecology visit if you have new, persistent, or worsening symptoms, or if something does not feel normal for you.
Common reasons for a gynecology visit include:
Abnormal, heavy, or irregular bleeding
Pelvic pain or painful periods
Abnormal Pap smear or HPV results
Fertility concerns
Menopause or hormonal symptoms
Ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, or PCOS
You do not need to wait until symptoms become severe before seeking care. Early evaluation can help clarify the cause of your symptoms and guide the next steps.

What happens during a gynecology evaluation?

Your visit begins with a conversation about your symptoms, menstrual history, medical history, medications, prior testing, and personal health goals. Depending on your concerns, your provider may recommend:
Physical or pelvic examination
Pap smear or HPV testing
Blood, urine, pregnancy, or infection testing
Pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound
Colposcopy, hysteroscopy, or endometrial sampling when indicated
Not every patient needs every test. Your provider will explain which evaluations are recommended and why.
