What is a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your provider to examine the inside of your uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope.

The hysteroscope is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus, allowing your provider to view the uterine cavity without making any incisions.

Hysteroscopy can be performed to diagnose the cause of certain symptoms or to treat conditions found during the procedure.

Why might I need a hysteroscopy?

Your provider may recommend a hysteroscopy if you have:

• Heavy, prolonged, or irregular menstrual bleeding
• Bleeding after menopause
• Bleeding between periods
• Recurrent miscarriage
• Difficulty becoming pregnant
• Suspected uterine polyps or fibroids
• Abnormal findings on ultrasound or other imaging studies
• Scar tissue within the uterus
• A retained intrauterine device (IUD)

A hysteroscopy provides a detailed view of the uterine cavity and can often identify problems that may not be visible on imaging tests alone.

What happens during a hysteroscopy?

The procedure may be performed in the office or a surgical setting, depending on your individual needs and the reason for the procedure.

During hysteroscopy:

• A hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus
• Sterile fluid is used to gently expand the uterus for better visualization
• Your provider carefully examines the uterine lining
• If necessary, small instruments can be passed through the hysteroscope to remove polyps, fibroids, scar tissue, or obtain tissue samples

Many patients experience mild cramping during or after the procedure.

What conditions can be treated during hysteroscopy?

In some cases, hysteroscopy can be used to treat conditions during the same procedure, including:

• Removal of uterine polyps
• Removal of certain fibroids
• Removal of scar tissue (adhesions)
• Endometrial biopsy
• Removal of retained tissue following pregnancy
• Removal of a displaced or retained IUD

Your provider will discuss the benefits, risks, and alternatives before recommending treatment.
