What is a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)?

A loop electrosurgical excision procedure, commonly called LEEP, is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove abnormal or precancerous cells from the cervix.

During the procedure, your provider uses a thin wire loop carrying a low-voltage electrical current to remove a small amount of abnormal cervical tissue. The tissue is then sent to a laboratory for further evaluation.

LEEP is commonly performed after an abnormal Pap test, abnormal HPV test, or colposcopy findings suggest the presence of precancerous cervical changes.

Why might I need a LEEP?

Your provider may recommend LEEP if you have:

• Abnormal Pap test results
• Persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
• Cervical dysplasia, also called cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)
• Abnormal findings during a colposcopy
• Precancerous changes involving the cervix

Removing abnormal cells can help prevent cervical cancer from developing.

Your provider will discuss your test results and explain whether LEEP is the most appropriate treatment for your situation.

What happens during a LEEP procedure?

LEEP is typically performed in the office and usually takes less than 30 minutes.

During the procedure:

• You lie on an examination table, similar to a pelvic exam.
• A speculum is inserted into the vagina to allow visualization of the cervix.
• Your provider numbs the cervix with a local anesthetic.
• A thin wire loop is used to remove abnormal cervical tissue.
• Special solutions or medications may be applied to reduce bleeding.

Most patients experience mild cramping or pressure during the procedure.

What should I expect after LEEP?

Recovery is generally straightforward, and most patients return to normal activities within a day or two.

After the procedure, it is common to experience:

• Mild cramping
• Light vaginal bleeding or spotting
• Dark-colored vaginal discharge
• Watery discharge for several weeks

Your provider may recommend avoiding intercourse, tampons, douching, and strenuous exercise for several weeks to allow the cervix to heal properly. Follow-up appointments and repeat cervical cancer screenings are important to ensure that abnormal cells have been successfully treated.
