When abnormal bleeding, fertility concerns, or recurrent pregnancy loss occur, additional imaging may be needed to better understand what's happening inside the uterus. A saline infusion sonohysterogram (SIS), sometimes called sonohysterography, provides a detailed view of the uterine cavity and can help identify conditions that may not be visible on a standard ultrasound. At Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology, the experienced team offers SIS testing at convenient locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island to help guide accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment.
A saline infusion sonohysterogram (SIS) is a specialized ultrasound procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus.
During the procedure, a small amount of sterile saline solution is placed into the uterus through a thin catheter. The saline gently expands the uterine cavity, allowing your provider to obtain clearer ultrasound images of the uterine lining and identify abnormalities that may otherwise be difficult to detect.
SIS is a minimally invasive procedure that can often be performed in the office.
Your provider may recommend an SIS to investigate symptoms or evaluate the uterus before fertility treatment.
Common reasons for SIS include:
SIS can provide valuable information about the shape and condition of the uterine cavity, helping your provider determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
The procedure is usually scheduled after your menstrual period has ended but before ovulation.
During the appointment:
The entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.
Some patients experience mild cramping during or shortly after the test.
Most patients can resume their usual activities immediately after the procedure. You may experience:
These symptoms are usually temporary and resolve within a day or two.
Your provider will review your results and discuss any recommended next steps, including additional testing or treatment if necessary.
