What is a saline infusion sonohysterogram (SIS)?

A saline infusion sonohysterogram (SIS) is a specialized ultrasound procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus.

During the procedure, a small amount of sterile saline solution is placed into the uterus through a thin catheter. The saline gently expands the uterine cavity, allowing your provider to obtain clearer ultrasound images of the uterine lining and identify abnormalities that may otherwise be difficult to detect.

SIS is a minimally invasive procedure that can often be performed in the office.

Why would I need an SIS?

Your provider may recommend an SIS to investigate symptoms or evaluate the uterus before fertility treatment.

Common reasons for SIS include:

• Heavy, prolonged, or irregular menstrual bleeding
• Bleeding between periods
• Recurrent miscarriage
• Difficulty becoming pregnant
• Suspected uterine polyps or fibroids
• Evaluation of scar tissue within the uterus
• Abnormal findings on a pelvic ultrasound
• Assessment before certain fertility treatments

SIS can provide valuable information about the shape and condition of the uterine cavity, helping your provider determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

How is an SIS performed?

The procedure is usually scheduled after your menstrual period has ended but before ovulation.

During the appointment:

• You lie comfortably on an examination table similar to a routine pelvic exam.
• A speculum is inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix.
• A thin catheter is gently passed through the cervix into the uterus.
• Sterile saline is introduced into the uterine cavity.
• A transvaginal ultrasound is performed while images are obtained.

The entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Some patients experience mild cramping during or shortly after the test.

What should I expect after an SIS?

Most patients can resume their usual activities immediately after the procedure. You may experience:

• Mild cramping
• Light spotting
• A small amount of watery discharge

These symptoms are usually temporary and resolve within a day or two.

Your provider will review your results and discuss any recommended next steps, including additional testing or treatment if necessary.
