Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the reproductive organs and a developing pregnancy. It can provide important information without using ionizing radiation.

Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology offers advanced ultrasound imaging at convenient locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island. Call the office nearest you or request an appointment online to schedule an evaluation.

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound creates images using a small device called a transducer. Depending on the reason for the examination, the transducer may be moved across the abdomen or gently placed inside the vagina.

Ultrasound may be used to:

  • Confirm and date a pregnancy
  • Monitor fetal growth and development
  • Evaluate the placenta and amniotic fluid
  • Examine the uterus and ovaries
  • Assess pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding
  • Evaluate fibroids, polyps, or ovarian cysts
  • Support infertility testing and treatment planning

Your provider will explain which type of ultrasound is appropriate for your needs.

What is a sonohysterogram?

A sonohysterogram is a specialized ultrasound that provides a clearer view of the inside of the uterus.

During the procedure, a thin tube is passed through the cervix and a small amount of sterile fluid is placed inside the uterus. The fluid allows your provider to better evaluate conditions such as:

  • Uterine polyps
  • Submucosal fibroids
  • Scar tissue
  • Differences in the shape of the uterine cavity

Sonohysterography may be recommended for abnormal bleeding, infertility, or certain abnormal ultrasound findings.

Is ultrasound safe?

Ultrasound does not use X-rays or ionizing radiation. Diagnostic ultrasound has a long history of medical use during pregnancy and in gynecologic care.

Ultrasound should be performed for an appropriate medical reason by trained healthcare professionals. Your provider will recommend the examination most appropriate for your symptoms or stage of pregnancy.

How should I prepare?

Preparation depends on the type of examination. You may be asked to arrive with a full bladder for an abdominal ultrasound or to empty your bladder before a transvaginal ultrasound.

The office will provide specific instructions before your appointment.
