High Risk Pregnancy

Being told that your pregnancy is high risk can feel overwhelming, but it does not mean that you or your baby will necessarily experience complications. It means that certain health, pregnancy, or fetal factors may require additional monitoring, specialized testing, or coordinated care.

The experienced OB-GYNs at Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology provide attentive prenatal care for both routine and high-risk pregnancies at convenient locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island. When appropriate, our physicians coordinate care with maternal-fetal medicine specialists and other medical professionals to support your health and your baby’s development throughout pregnancy. Call the office nearest you or request an appointment online to schedule a prenatal consultation.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the pregnant patient, baby, or both may have an increased chance of complications during pregnancy, delivery, or the postpartum period.

This does not mean that complications will occur. It means that additional monitoring, testing, or specialist care may be recommended.

High-risk pregnancy care may include:

  • More frequent prenatal visits
  • Additional bloodwork or ultrasounds
  • Fetal monitoring later in pregnancy
  • Consultation with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist
  • A personalized labor and delivery plan

With appropriate care and monitoring, many patients with high-risk pregnancies have healthy pregnancies and deliveries.

What can make a pregnancy high risk?

A pregnancy may be considered high risk because of:

  • Chronic high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disease, or another medical condition
  • Gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, or another pregnancy complication
  • Twins or higher-order multiples
  • Concerns about fetal growth or development
  • Placental or amniotic fluid concerns
  • A history of preterm birth, stillbirth, recurrent pregnancy loss, or another serious pregnancy complication
  • Pregnancy at age 35 or older
  • Certain medications, infections, or lifestyle exposures

A pregnancy that begins as low risk may become high risk if a concern develops later.

Will I need to see a maternal-fetal medicine specialist?

A maternal-fetal medicine specialist is an OB-GYN with additional training in complex pregnancies.

Some patients need only a one-time consultation, while others benefit from ongoing co-management. In many cases, the specialist and your Bayard OB-GYN work together, with your Bayard provider continuing routine prenatal care and delivery planning.

How often will I need appointments?

The frequency of your visits depends on your medical condition, stage of pregnancy, symptoms, and your baby’s growth and testing results.

Some patients need only a few additional appointments, while others require more frequent monitoring. Your provider will create a schedule based on your individual needs.
