What is contraception?

Contraception, also called birth control, includes medications, devices, procedures, and behavioral methods used to prevent pregnancy.

The right method depends on your health, lifestyle, menstrual symptoms, preferences, and plans for future pregnancy. Some methods may also make periods lighter, more predictable, or less painful.

What types of contraception are available?

Options include:

  • Birth control implant: A small hormonal implant placed under the skin of the upper arm that can prevent pregnancy for up to five years.
  • Intrauterine devices: Hormonal and nonhormonal IUDs provide highly effective contraception for several years and can be removed when pregnancy is desired.
  • Birth control pills: Daily hormonal medication that may also regulate periods and reduce bleeding or cramping.
  • Birth control patch: A hormonal patch applied to the skin and replaced on a prescribed schedule.
  • Vaginal ring: A flexible ring placed in the vagina that releases hormones to prevent pregnancy.
  • Birth control injection: A progestin injection generally given every three months.
  • Barrier methods: External or internal condoms, diaphragms, and other methods used during intercourse.
  • Permanent contraception: Removal or blockage of the fallopian tubes for patients who do not desire a future pregnancy.

Only condoms help reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections. They may be used along with another contraceptive method for added protection.

What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception can reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex, contraceptive failure, or a missed birth control method.

Options may include:

  • A levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pill
  • Prescription ulipristal acetate
  • A copper IUD
  • Certain hormonal IUDs when appropriate

Some options may be used within five days, but emergency contraception is generally more effective when used as soon as possible.

How do I choose the right method?

Your provider will help you consider:

  • How effective each method is
  • Whether you prefer hormonal or nonhormonal contraception
  • How often the method requires attention
  • Possible side effects
  • Your menstrual symptoms
  • Your medical history and medications
  • How soon you may want to become pregnant
  • Whether you need protection against sexually transmitted infections

Your contraceptive needs may change over time, and you can return to discuss switching methods or managing side effects.
