What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a special type of X-ray that takes detailed breast images. Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology refers patients for mammograms to check for signs of breast cancer even before they notice any changes or feel a lump.

Most women should begin screening once a year or every two years from around age 40. However, if you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, your OB/GYN might recommend starting earlier. They’ll help create a screening plan that’s right for you.

Why are mammograms important?

Mammograms detect breast cancer early when it’s most treatable. Finding cancer before it has a chance to invade large areas of tissue or spread to other organs (metastasize) can lead to better outcomes and may mean less invasive treatments. That’s why regular screenings are so important.

Mammograms use a low level of radiation and are typically very safe. The benefits of early detection far outweigh any slight risks.

What happens during a mammogram?

On the day of your mammogram, don’t wear deodorant, lotions, or powder on your breasts or under your arms, as these may show up on the X-ray. Wear a two-piece outfit since you’ll need to undress from the waist up.

During the test, a technician places one breast at a time between two flat plates on the mammography machine. The plates press the breast gently but firmly to spread the tissue and get a clear image. It only takes a few seconds for each picture.

You may feel some pressure or discomfort, but it shouldn’t be painful. The entire process is quick, and most people find it manageable.

Let the technician know if you’re feeling too uncomfortable so they can make adjustments. However, remember that getting a clear image is vital, so compressing the breast tissue is unavoidable.

What if my mammogram results aren’t normal?

An abnormal mammogram result doesn’t necessarily prove you have cancer. It may just mean your provider needs more images or to use a different method, such as an ultrasound or MRI, to get a better look.

If anything needs a follow-up, the Bayard Street Obstetrics & Gynecology team guides you through the next steps. They aim to ensure you feel informed, supported, and confident about your breast health.
